5 Fundamental Architectural Principles that are Timeless

Having an unprecedented length in the construction boom for the Philippine Real Estate landscape, we ask ourselves how will this change our skyline and what will that communicate to our future generations on how we tackled this golden age in Philippine construction.

Differing approaches and design philosophies – how will the structures combine and tell a narrative that defines Filipino creativity? Do we give way to fanciful iconism that tries to grab ones attention while its appeal fades away in time? How do we ensure timeless architecture that we can proudly declare moving forward into the future? Here we breakdown certain fundamentals that remain universally appreciated throughout centuries of architectural practice and history.

  1. Natural light:

Natural light is one of the most astonishing spectacle available for us to enjoy. Engineers have come up with different lighting moods like Cool white, warm white, daylight and many more trying to replicate its properties, however it is not just its color tone but it is also a biorhythm time indicator. We look at it and have an understanding of approximate time of day it is. Architects use of natural light is one of the most important aspects of design. We consider window placement and size of openings in determining the proper amount of daylight within the building. Clerestories and skylights give spaces a sense of openness and freedom even in an otherwise enclosed space.

  2. Open Spaces:

Spaces have to be designed to cater to a certain function, but being to SM CITY BF Parañaquerigid in its utility renders a space spiritually dead. Open spaces communicate “possibilities,” it communicates that life can turn ever which way and the spaces will be able to afford life’s’ adventures.  These days’ designers have to be creative in crafting open spaces by consolidating them to create better impact and interaction in-between use. Outdoor open spaces are also utilized adjacent to window openings to create in indoor-outdoor experience. A wonderfully proportioned open space will be appreciated for its timeless and regal quality wherever you are.

  3. Art:

Nothing portrays the abstractness of human thought and emotion more than art. It can be seen, and experienced though sometimes there are no words to express it, it can be felt and mutually agreed on. Art breathes life and wonder in architectural spaces devoid of a narrative and creates inspiration and beauty that is more visceral. Advancements in building technology allow us to fuse art and architectural design more and more seamlessly these days, but you can see even with ancient temples and structures, all over the world artisan have always adorned it with Art.

  4. Integrate advances in technology:

Timeless architecture keeps things simple and does not flaunt. This means those innovations that we need, that make life better for us, must be integrated and kept hidden. Whether indoor plumbing back in the days or Structured cabling, we must tailor fit the building to accommodate these systems so that we don’t feel like we live inside a robot. Though buildings these days are becoming more and more of a technological fusion. More so in the foreseeable years to come, but technological innovation is like an ocean of waves that will be surpassed by the next wave of innovation. Flaunting technology as part of a building design feature, will make you wish you didn’t flaunt your big combat phone when Motorola was the leading innovator in mobile phone technology.  Architects are faced with the challenge of flexibility and adaptability to new technologies at the same time keeping it simple.

  5. Sustainable designs:

Environmentally friendly and self-sustaining structures are slowly taking shape around the world these days. In fact, the very existence of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) – Green building certification program – is a great testament to the current dedication to building sustainability.

However before LEED was instituted, concepts to create structures that co-exist in harmony with nature has been practiced all around the world with different names. Contextual design, Passive Cooling, vernacular architecture, Feng Shui these have been instinctive early attempts to design with and not against nature. Grading system in Environmental design like LEED helps a lot to reel in Architecture that may be heavily driven on impractical fanciful iconisms. Though it is not yet required its existence forms a great benchmark to know where our design stands.

Designing Architectural buildings is a monumental responsibility not only to the environment, but also to the community of this generation and the generations to come. Since buildings, unlike fashion trends, are built to last, it encompasses different centuries and tell the story of how we come to live as a society. Its spaces have transformational value in our way of life and what we aspire to achieve.

Because of this, we should strive to have a longer outlook in our design outputs, that the conceptual value we contribute should outlive even the legacy we leave as architects long after we are gone.
